Interesting times calls for interesting new approaches. We were asked to produce an new internal comms podcast project for Australian regional water utility company, Unitywater. The company had a need for extra communications to keep their home-workers and field-based engineers connected.

The podcast itself is awesome. The Unitywater Comms team have revealed previously unheard talents to present an upbeat and positive show. But as a private project, it will only be heard by employees of Unitywater

Private Podcasts

The idea of an otherwise publicly distributed RSS feed being restricted to specific listeners is a new requirement. It’s a tribute to the effectiveness of podcasting as a communication channel and a robust delivery method. At least two podcast hosting companies have risen to the challenge and created invitation-only podcast services. Private podcasts are excluded from Apple, Google and other directories, but visible to invited listeners – and can even be subscribed to in the users Apple Podcasts app and other players.

Support is Sales

With a degree of urgency from the client, we had to identify and test a solution very rapidly. I had a few questions about the details of subscription and sharing for the solutions I found. So, I put a question to the Support teams of two companies. As with many people during the COVID19 pandemic, support staff are working remotely causing increased delays in response time.

However, after putting my question to the online Support Team at Whooshkaa, I was surprised to get a reply asking if I’d like a call from the CEO. Sure enough, Mr Rob Loewenthal appeared on the phone at the agreed time to walk me through the details of their Private Podcasts for Business offer.

Staying engaged with the details of customer enquiries when you’re running a successful enterprise is no doubt difficult -let alone making the time to personally connect to help them.

Through our call I gained some insights into trends with private podcasts and their wide adoption among remote school educators. As well as that I saw an engaged Chief Exec who cares enough about the details of his business to find time to speak with customers.

So, Private podcasts – they’re a thing. Either for entirely private feeds or for premium episodes, this spin on podcasting technology is a useful addition to the toolset.
